We started this lab to explore that question.

While there's no shortage of technical R&D, the systems that help us understand human behavior and the sociocultural context that technology enters and shapes are far less developed.

We call this missing layer cultural infrastructure. It's the perspective, context, and cultural fluency that allows new ideas to find their signal and stand out from the noise. Without it, even the most impressive technologies risk becoming irrelevant: disconnected from real needs, and unlikely to improve the status quo.

We created Formant to fill that gap. Right now, Formant is focused on studying how emerging technologies are transforming how we live and work, and responding intentionally and practically. When we see gaps in how technology is being applied or understood, we build responses.
